Didier Auriol Wins Catalunya Rally

Frenchman Didier Auriol has won the Catalunya Rally for Peugeot in an event surrounded in controversy. It shows the adaptability of the drivers in the World Rally Championship that 2 weeks after battling through the swamp-like conditions in Portugal they now have to pit their skills on a completely Tarmaced event. However just as in Corsica last year suggestions that illegal reconnaissance of new stages had taken place. The Citroen team were competing in this event and their driver Jesus Puras was leading the event for some time but was penalised for an infringement and fell down the rankings allowing Gilles Panizzi and Auriol to make it a 1-2 for Peugeot with Tommi Makinen 3rd and his championship rival Carlos Sainz finishing 5th.
